2,500 square metres of exhibition area at Faszination Modellbau Karlsruhe are dedicated to model shipbuilding. A large pool inside the exhibition hall, generous table-top areas and last not least the fairground’s own lake all create ideal settings for over 1,000 model ships.
Several times a day Dieter Miedek and his renowned group of modellers stage spectacular battles between Red Indian canoes and settlers’ rafts on the water pool. During these exciting encounters burning arrows are fired across the water, even setting fire to a floating log cabin.
Daily demonstrations show a drilling platform being towed out to sea and anchored. During the drilling operation a fire breaks out on the platform and several fireboats have to come to the rescue.
Tugboats, steamships and powerboats can all be seen in action on the impressive water pool and on the outdoor fairground lake, causing high waves and thrills for the spectators.
Model ships of all sorts and sizes are displayed on spacious tabletop areas, including exquisite ship models presented by “ModellWerft” magazine and an impressive display of noble yachts. The many true-to-detail replicas of luxury yachts are the highlight of this year’s model ship exhibition. Further eye-catchers include Ralph Gralke’s 3.5 metre long supertanker, impressive racing yachts by Heinz Schmalenstroth and a series of test models made from construction kits by Andreas Stach. Visitors have the opportunity to see these nautical show stars close up and to converse with their constructors.
Numerous other sailing vessels from classic to modern are presented on platforms around the pool area, accompanied by tugboats, steamships and power boats, all of which supply ship modellers with plenty of ideas and illustrative material for their own model engineering projects. A British exhibition of “grey ships” rounds off the range of special displays.
